Why one side can be warm while the other is hard
Sub-Zero’s built-in refrigerators use Dual Refrigeration: the refrigerator and the freezer are cooled by separate systems inside one cabinet. That is why a fresh-food section can sit in the high forties beside a freezer that is still rock hard, and why a compressor is almost never the first suspect. What has gone wrong is normally on the warm side alone — the fan that pushes its cold air, the route that air takes to the shelves, or a coil sealed under frost because the defrost parts on that circuit have stopped clearing it. Measure it before you judge it
The number on the control panel is the setpoint you asked for, not a reading of the air, so a panel showing 38°F proves nothing about the shelf under it. Sub-Zero’s method for a refrigerator is a thermometer standing in a glass of water, the glass placed halfway from front to back and halfway from top to bottom of the compartment, left for 12 hours. A reading taken that way turns a vague complaint into a number, and the number decides how urgent the visit is.
Water or ice under the crispers
Meltwater that appears below the lowest drawers, or freezes into a sheet across the base, came off the rear wall and failed to leave. Sub-Zero traces it either to frost on that wall or to a drain trough and tube along it blocked by food, standing water or ice. A trough you can see into is worth clearing yourself. Ice that keeps rebuilding on the wall is the defrost side of the same circuit, and clearing the water without finding out why it froze simply books the next visit.
