Ice on the Rails: Why a Freezer Drawer Stops Closing Flush

A freezer drawer is closed by its own weight and the weight of what is in it. That makes it simple, and it also means the drawer cannot tell the difference between the cabinet and a ridge of ice: it runs until it meets something, and stops. Once it stops a finger short of closed, the seal no longer meets the frame along its whole length, and room air — carrying moisture — slips into a compartment held at 0°F. The moisture freezes on the first cold surface it finds, which is the frame, the slides and the floor of the drawer. The ice holds the drawer open a little further, and the loop feeds itself.

Breaking the loop means finding what started it. Clearing the ice without that only resets the clock.

How it starts

Sub-Zero’s own list of causes for ice in a freezer is short, and every item on it can begin a drawer loop:

• The drawer was left ajar. A drawer nudged by a foot or held open by a bag of ice for an evening lets in enough moisture to lay the first ridge on the slides.
• The seal is torn or flattened. Drawer seals sit at shin height and take kicks, mops and basket edges. A tear along the top edge, or a corner that no longer springs back, lets in a steady thread of damp air all day.
• The drain tube has frozen. Defrost water that cannot leave the cabinet refreezes where it lands, often at the back of the drawer floor.
• The defrost element has failed. The coil ices over, air stops passing through it, and the compartment warms while the frost keeps building.

The pattern of the ice is the first clue. A ridge along the top of the seal and on the front of the slides points at air getting in at the drawer. Ice at the back of the drawer floor points at the drain. Frost spread over the rear wall of the compartment, with the drawer closing properly, points at the defrost side.

What you can safely check

The checklist below is what can be done without tools and without opening anything. Two of the checks matter more than they look. The basket: on units with removable baskets, a basket that has lifted off its retainers at one corner rides high and stops the drawer before the seal meets the frame. And the setting: turning the freezer colder to fight the frost does not help, and a colder cabinet makes a frozen drain more likely.

If the ice is heavy, Sub-Zero’s general method is a manual defrost: the section switched off, towels down to catch the water, and the drawer or door left open for the several hours a thaw takes, or a bowl of hot water set inside and changed as it cools. Either way, wipe the water up afterwards and do not chip at the ice.

What the repair usually is

When the loop started at the seal, the fix is a new drawer gasket, fitted after the drawer front has been checked for square: a seal on a drawer that sags just moves the gap. That work is priced under drawer gasket cost.

Drawers on different units

The loop is the same on every freezer drawer, but the access is not. An all-freezer drawer unit under the counter, such as the Designer freezer drawers, has its condenser behind the kickplate at floor level. A drawer under the refrigerator of an over-and-under or French door unit shares a cabinet with the fresh-food section above it. On units with more than one drawer, the upper drawer can carry a control cable — one more reason a stuck drawer is eased out, never forced.

   Pull the drawer fully out and look along both slides and the floor of the opening for ice, packages or a tipped basket.

   Make sure nothing in the basket rides above its rim, and that the basket sits down on its retainers at every corner.

   Close the drawer on a strip of paper along the top edge and at both corners. Where it pulls out with no drag, air is getting in.

   Check the freezer setting on the control. Sub-Zero recommends 0°F; a colder setting does not cure frost and can make the drain freeze.

Follow-ups

Can I chip the ice off the rails myself?

Do not chip it: a blade can cut the drawer seal or the liner, and both cost more than the ice. Why does the drawer close and then ease back open?

Because it is meeting something before it seals: ice on the slides, a basket riding up, or a package behind the basket. Is a new gasket always the fix?

No. A new seal only works if the drawer front sits square to the cabinet and nothing props the drawer open. If the front sags or a slide has bent, the gap simply moves. The seal is replaced after the drawer has been checked for alignment, which is why the two are priced together at the visit.
